Truck campers tend to receive more hard use than any other type of RV. They are used to reach that secret fishing hole, that ‘way back in there” hunting camp and a million other places that you could not, or would not dare to take a motorhome, travel trailer etc. Usually this means off-road use, often in severe weather. Most truck campers spend their entire life outdoors in all types of climates and road conditions.
Aluminum has been the most popular material for the exterior siding surfaces because of weight, cost, durability and ease of repair. With minimum maintenance, the painted aluminum surface will stay good looking and give many, many years of service.
Fiberglass has become a popular alternative to aluminum for the siding of many recreational vehicles. Its ability to reject denting is the primary reason for its use; the smooth surface also more readily accepts creative graphics making for an attractive finish. Fiberglass acts as a stiffener for the whole camper body and being a flat surface, as opposed to aluminums undulating skin, seals far better round the windows, door frames and any opening in the camper exterior. Although it is slightly heavier and more costly than aluminum, fiberglass is preferred in areas of severe hail.
Both aluminum siding and fiberglass have their place and each has it own set of advantages.
Northstar Truck Campers offer their customers a choice of either siding.
Battery
6v flooded cell batteries are often said to be the best answer for Truck Campers. We recomend 12v. The amp hour capacity is cited as the main advantage to 6v. When specifying batteries for my new camper, I looked into the AGM batteries and decided to go with AGM. In my previous rig it was impossible to check the fluid level without removing the battery; therefore no maintenance was a big attraction.
Here is some of the information I found:
AGM batteries have several advantages over both gelled and wet (flooded cell) batteries. Since all the electrolyte (acid) is contained in the glass mats, they cannot spill, even if broken. This also means that since they are non-hazardous, and the shipping costs are lower. In addition, since there is no liquid to freeze and expand, they are practically immune from freezing damage. AGM batteries are "recombinant" — meaning that the oxygen and hydrogen recombine inside the battery. These use gas phase transfer of oxygen to the negative plates to recombine them back into water while charging and prevent the loss of water through electrolysis.
The charging voltages are the same as for any standard battery — no need for any special adjustments or problems with incompatible chargers or charge controls. And, since the internal resistance is extremely low, there is almost no heating of the battery even under heavy charge and discharge currents. AGM batteries have no charge or discharge current limits. AGM batteries do deliver and absorb higher rates of amperage than other sealed batteries
AGMs have a very low self-discharge — from 1% to 3% per month is usual. This means that they can sit in storage for much longer periods without charging than lead acid batteries.
The AGM fast recharge means less generator time if you are boondocking.
The plates in AGM’s are tightly packed and rigidly mounted, and will withstand shock and vibration better than any standard battery. Rough roads don’t hurt the batteries. An additional advantage is that 12v batteries over 6v is that if you need a spare for the truck it is there. If you have two 6v and one fails, the remaining 6v won’t run your system. AGM’s will cost 2 to 3 times as much as flooded batteries of the same capacity. A 6v “golf cart” deep cycle is a better economic choice if the advantages of AGM are not important.
Deka, manufactured by East Penn, is a very high quality battery. First though, what is a reason for going to two 6V instead of one 12V? If greater capacity is your goal, you would be better going with two 12V in parallel which doubles the Amp-hour capacity. To do that with 6V batteries, you would have to buy batteries of twice the capacity--remember, capacity adds with batteries in parallel, but it stays the same when they are in series.
We think you should look into these factors when buying a baterie for your Northstar Truck Camper: Your price-point, what you need the batteries for, details of the average outing with your Northstar Truck Campers.
